Saving On Your Motoring Fuel Expenses – A Quick Guide

Auto Date Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

The United States does not have an effective system for mass transport, so its citizens have to drive cars instead. Oil prices are spiking, for a number of reasons, be they simply supply and demand, risky speculation, or just plain greed on the oil companies’ part. Some suggestions on how to spend less on oil therefore comes in useful. Saving some here and some there before long adds up.

Driving a car that’s fuel-efficient is the most obvious way to save on fuel, like a sedan, or a hybrid, if that’s within your means. But even with gas-guzzlers, there are ways to use less gas, such as driving more slowly and not accelerating fast. The more you depress the gas pedal the more fuel is used, so make a habit of free-wheeling and letting the car’s momentum carry it forward. There are numerous small ways that can keep gasoline in your gas tank for longer.

Be sure use the grade of fuel defined for your vehicle. Premium oil, for instance, costs more but will benefit only some cars, so don’t waste money here if your auto is not one of them. Removing unnecessary weight from a vehicle and keeping to slower speeds saves a surprising amount of fuel. Not many people understand the effect of driving at high speed on fuel consumption; suffice to say it’s a fact that it increases dramatically. Aside from the increased danger posed by high speed driving, slowing down will keep money in your pocket.

Removing the roof racks from your car will improve your fuel consumption, so take it off if you’re not actually using it. Roof racks cause greater drag on your vehicle, which, along with the weight they add, impacts on fuel efficiency. Look in your automobile’s trunk and get rid of any weight that’s not needed, no matter how little you think the difference it may make. Our choices, with gas prices seemingly set on an upward path, are limited: explore fuel substitutes and alternatives, and apply ways to reduce how much we use, or merely resign oneself to the high fuel prices. It’s difficult to get people to do more than just complain, and so the majority continue in their usual ways and just pay the higher prices.

In addition to automobiles with better fuel-efficiency being bought in greater numbers, nothing much is being done. Most of the people who try to reduce their gas usage are those whose budgets exclude them from trying the other options. Maybe, one day soon, it will get through to all of us that it’s a great idea to use gas as sparingly as possible. Besides the money that would be saved, swaying every driver to drive more slowly would make our streets a lot safer and cleaner.
